How to Conquer Athens in 24 Hours

A One-Day Athens Itinerary

If you only have 24 hours in Athens, don’t stress. This city is very manageable in a day if you plan it right. This Athens itinerary focuses on the essentials: iconic history, incredible food, and neighborhoods that are perfect for wandering. It’s fast-paced but realistic, and ideal if Athens is a stopover or part of a bigger Greece trip.

Morning Pastries & Coffee

No Athens itinerary should start without a bakery stop. Grab a cinnamon roll or any other pastry that catches you attention from 72 Hour Bakery on your way out. It’s the perfect mix of modern and local, and exactly what you need before a full day of walking. Strong coffee, flaky pastry, and you’re officially ready to explore Athens.

FAVOURITE MENU ITEM: Cinnamon Roll

What to do in Athens

Visit the Acropolis

Seeing the Acropolis is a must when spending one day in Athens. I chose to do a guided tour, and I’m so glad I did. It was easy to book, easy to show up, and having the history explained while walking through such an iconic site made the experience far more meaningful.

Best Time to Visit the Acropolis

If you’re visiting in warmer months, plan ahead. Book the earliest time slot (8am) to beat the heat or opt for an evening visit instead. Early entry tickets sell out quickly, so this is one part of your Athens Greece itinerary you’ll want to lock in advance.

Explore Plaka

After the Acropolis, head into Plaka, which is Athens’ oldest neighbourhood. This is where you will wander narrow streets, browse small shops, and enjoy views of the Acropolis peeking out from every angle. Yes, it’s popular, but it’s also charming and absolutely worth including in any one-day Athens itinerary.

If you are a big soccer fan like us, head to Panathinaikos FC’s Official Store in Plaka.

Where to Eat in Athens

O Kostas for Souvlaki

For lunch, stop at O Kostas for pork souvlaki and fresh-cut fries. It’s casual, quick, and packed with flavor. These fries were absolutely delicious and hard to top in all of Greece. There will most likely be a long line in the sun so make sure to plan for both in your day plans. If you’re wondering where to eat in Athens on a tight schedule, this is an easy win.

Evening Drinks at 360 Bar

Before dinner, grab a drink at 360 Bar overlooking Monastiraki Square. The views are incredible, especially as the sun sets and the Acropolis lights up. It’s the perfect pause in your 24 hours in Athens with just enough time to take it all in before heading to dinner.

Late Dinner at O Lolos

Dinner at O Lolos was a highlight. The stuffed grilled calamari and horta were unforgettable, but honestly, every dish we tried was outstanding. We would go back to Athens, just for this restaurant, we absolutely loved it!

Where to Stay in Athens

I stayed at INN Athens, and it was the perfect base. Comfortable, central, and the breakfast alone deserves a mention. The breakfast fuelled me for a full day of walking through Athens. If you’re planning a one-day Athens itinerary, staying somewhere walkable and near the train station makes everything smoother.

Heading to the Greek Islands? Add Paros Next

If Athens is just the beginning of your trip, Paros should absolutely be next on your list.

Final Thoughts on Visiting Athens in One Day

Athens is layered, energetic, and full of contrast and I think 24 hours is the perfect amount of time in Athens, especially if it is your stop on the way to a Greek island. You can experience so much of what makes the city special. This Athens itinerary is ideal if you’re short on time but still want a meaningful taste of the city. When I go back to Greece, I will definitely spend one day in Athens since it is the perfect amount of time to get a taste of the city!
