Did you ever think you would climb an active volcano? Wow just wow! This Mount Batur sunrise trek is an experience of a lifetime. Mount Batur is an active volcano located in Kintamani. Mount Batur is one of Bali’s active volcanoes and has become a very popular tourist attraction. It is 1,717 meters high and it makes for quite an unforgettable view at the top. You are literally standing above the clouds when you hike to the top during the Mount Batur Bali Sunrise Hike. Why wouldn’t you want to see this?
You can enjoy this experience from anywhere in Bali, but keep reading to hear about my insight about what I found best.

When booking this tour, I suggest booking it in Ubud. I found it much cheaper booking in Ubud than in other areas and even online and in the end they all provide the same experience. When you are booking, they will offer you a private or group tour. I personally don’t think it is worth paying extra for a private tour. I did a group tour and there were only two other people with us so to me that was perfect! During your Bali hiking, there are many groups doing the same thing at the same time, so booking a private tour is pointless to me.
What Should You Wear?
I recommend wearing long pants and a sweater because it is before sunrise, so it is chilly. The hike does get challenging when you get higher up because it becomes slippery from the loose volcanic rock. The rock can also be pretty sharp (my runners now have a hole in them haha!) Keep this in mind when thinking about what shoes to wear! (runners or hiking shoes are recommended).
All About the Mount Batur Sunrise Trek Experience
The Mount Batur Bali Sunrise Hike begins VERY early, but who cares because you’re on vacation! You get picked up around 1:30-2 AM to begin your day. I slept for around an hour, but you can decide what is best for you! They will then bring you to base camp where they provide you breakfast, tea or coffee. You can also use the bathroom here for no charge (bring hand sanitizer, there is no soap).
After breakfast, you will get driven to Mount Batur where you will meet your guide. Your guide should provide you a flashlight because you WILL need this as it is pitch black on the path. This is also the last place you can use the toilet (Price: 5k IDR) because there are no toilets once you begin your hike.
As you reach the top, the clouds will still be covering most of the sky. You will want to get your camera ready for the sunrise. See below the picture of the sun just starting to rise.
There’s really no explanation of the feeling you get at the top of Mount Batur. In all honesty I was a little nervous knowing that I was hiking an active volcano in Bali. However, when you’re in Bali and you see all of the excitement around this Mount Batur sunrise trek, you won’t be nervous anymore.
The picture below is of the sunrise as it continues above the clouds. This is the beautiful view you will see at the top. Don’t forget to capture it all on video and pictures!
You will stay at the top of Mount Batur to eat the breakfast that they offer you and to enjoy the view. After about an hour, you will make your way down the volcano and see some cute monkeys enjoying the sunshine on your way.
On your way down you will also see a plate that tells you that Mount Batur is 1,717 meters over sea level. Wow!

The Mount Batur Sunrise Trek Example Itinerary
There are a ton of locals at the side of the roads trying to sell you a tour. I went with a company called Bagus Bali Sunrise Trekking. The itinerary for your Mount Batur Bali Sunrise Trek will be an 8 hour day. Here is an example:
1:00am – 3:00 am: Pick up at your hotel
3:15 am: The tour company will provide you coffee
4:00 am: Arrive at the base camp of Mount Batur and begin hike to the top
5:30 am: Arrive at the top of Mount Batur to enjoy a beautiful sunrise above the clouds
6:00 am: Watch the sunrise from the top of Mount Batur and enjoy breakfast from the tour company
7:00 am: Head down to the bottom of Mount Batur
8:30 am: 9:00am: Arrive to the car and head back to your hotel
The price of the tour will differ depending on where the company is picking you up. When I did the Mount Batur Sunrise Trek tour, the price for one person was around $40 Canadian.
